SFAF Podcast #5 - Dr. Judith Auerbach on Combining the Latest Behavioral and Biomedical HIV Prevention Strategies

In this episode, Dr. Judith Auerbach, Deputy Executive Director for Science and Public Policy at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, discusses the latest research on behavioral interventions to prevent HIV and illustrates a new combined biomedical/behavioral approach to decrease infection rates.

Dr. Judith Auerbach is responsible for developing, leading, and managing SFAF’s local, state, national and international policy agenda.  Prior to joining SFAF, Dr. Auerbach served as Vice President, Public Policy and Program Development at amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. In 1998, Dr. Auerbach served in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as Assistant Director for Social and Behavioral Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley and has published and presented in the fields of AIDS, health research and science policy, and family policy and gender.

Dr. Auerbach is correct that the emphasis cannot be on so-called biomedical preventions. She noticably skipped over circumcision, which is a risk reduction measure rather than a prevention -- and may not even be a risk reducer. I agree with her thoughts on changing the social conditions in which HIV thrives rather than the magic bullet approach of Bailey and Halperin and their ilk.
